Alterations and additions to ground floor flat and front and rear gardens of a Late Victorian semi-detached villa

At the base of the cliff-like rear wall of a street of late Victorian semis in North West London, overlooking a tightly enclosed and damp valley floor of a garden, a small building made of concrete, grey and board-marked for the base, cream and smooth for the superstructure, has been built.

Starting at the level of the pavement, and using the same sandstone pavers, a path descends along a series of platforms, some eroded to take planting, some raised to hold rectangles of lawn above the water table. One of the platforms is raised to the level of the existing apartment and supports the garden room itself. The concrete shell has been designed to be as slender as possible, its floating overhangs determined by the need to let in winter sun and create summer shade. It is placed on the north eastern corner of the garden, opening long views down the block towards the enormous trees and the evening sun.

The interior of the space is lined in very precise joinery, oiled hardwood for the frames and floors, white painted and flush for the rest. A new wall reassigns space between bedroom and garden room, its smooth curves washed by the light from seamless skylight which forms the joint between the house and the garden room.

The architecture moves from rough to smooth, dark to light, ground to sky, wet to dry.
