Structural glass extension to an existing barn
The proposal involved infilling a small existing area of submerged terrace with a frameless glass ‘lid’, to enclose the space outside of the existing barn.
The project was undertaken by Loyn & Co Architects for private clients and completed in August 2011.
The design is such that it is not be seen from the South, owing to the reduced ground level and enclosing walls, nor from the West where it is entirely screened by the existing building. From the North and East it is barely visible by virtue of the frameless glass construction.
The extension creates minimal alterations to existing building and is very lightweight in appearance. The glass planes serve to enhance the views of the site from the existing building and not only act as a backdrop to the setting but also reflect the surrounding rich landscape.
The proposed glazed extension and roof maximise daylight into the building, whilst the existing stone walls provide thermal mass. The character of the existing building / site has not been altered in any way but rather the new glazed extension aids and enhances connection with the surrounding landscape.
