Frameless Glass and Timber clad extension to an existing barn conversion (barn conversion by others)
To present a strong sense of place, the design takes inspiration from local agricultural buildings, with their distinct materiality and strong connection with the landscape. The simple and direct forms of these common structures offer a visual simplicity and an appropriate character for the site.
The project was undertaken by Loyn & Co Architects for private clients and completed in February 2010.
The scheme is defined by a simple geometric form clad in timber, visually separated from the existing barn by a 1.2m wide glass strip. The extension is single storey with a frameless glass balustrade to the first floor roof terrace - accessed across the walk-on glass strip - which offers views over the surrounding farmland. The materials and forms used seek to create a subtle and subservient addition to the barn, whilst providing the clients with the additional space required for their family. The new extension also realigns the barn back to its original boundary.
