Double height addition to an end of terrace property to provide additional accommodation
Situated between Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common in London, SW11, this end of terrace house is very similar to all other terraced houses in the area. However, being end of terrace and having a slightly wider than average plot, the clients had an unusual opportunity to extend to the side and thereby significantly increase the footprint of the house.
Giles Pike Architects have designed a bold side extension which not only provides large open plan living space internally, but also makes for strong architectural expression externally. The bold and severe architectural treatment of brick, glass and steel contrasts with the Victorian decorative detailing of the host building and in doing so adds to the visual interest of the street scene.
