Refurbishment and rear extension of a London terraced house which was completed in early November. The concept was to bring light into the space without losing privacy and to connect with the garden

AndArchitects brief was to create a family space to the rear of a London terraced house. The house and garden is overlooked by neighbouring properties. The challenge was to bring light into the space without losing privacy and to connect with the garden.

AndArchitects design forms a simple but beautifully detailed extension to the side of the house. The glass roof appears to slice seamlessly into the brickwork with flush internal and external finishes either side. The location and detailing of the glazed cut means that it is read as an intervention against the original building.

The perspective created by the strong architecture draws the eye to the garden and trees beyond. This gives glimpses of green throughout the space.

The design relocated the kitchen from the front of the house. Now the parents can inhabit the kitchen while their young children play within view in the garden.
