Artist's workspace set within a leafy garden in South London; beautifully detailed with sophisticated control of daylight and a contrasting plywood interior and Sugi exterior

The artist David Connearn asked Studio Callaghan to design a sustainable artist’s workspace located in Deptford, South London.

The primary generator was the day lighting requirement of the space and this led to extensive modelling in real and computer lighting models. Existing site conditions necessitated extensive adjustment of ground levels to achieve internal height.

A curved light scoop and curved ceiling reflector spread top light across the working wall surfaces of the studio. The studio makes extensive use of the different characteristics of wood. The interior skin is birch ply, the exterior cladding burnt Sugi (Cryptomeria Japonica).

All opening panels to the internal walls hinge or pivot to fit flush. A number of support beams and furniture elements, such as a drawing easel, hinge or slide out of the wall surface. The studio was self-built with all major components manufactured on site. The building was completed in September 2011.
