New gallery spaces, a flexible gallery & project space, artists studios, writing studio, office space, landscaped rear courtyard, and new facade to an existing terraced building within Camden Broadway Conservation Area
The Cob gallery and associated spaces occupy the ground and basement of a building that combines the typical plan form of a mid-Victorian terrace with a 1980's rear extension resulting in a long, narrow series of interior spaces that extends from the public domain of the street to a small private courtyard to the rear.
The accommodation comprises two vertically linked gallery spaces, a further 50 sq m gallery /project space with access on to the rear courtyard (which can function in isolation or as an extension of the gallery spaces), and a 40 sq m studio, with writing and office space for the co-directors.
The design seeks to bring continuity to the series of spaces extending the full depth of the site, modulated by their relationship to new and existing sources of daylight. The creation of a new void immediately behind the facade, with structural glazing over the front lightwell visually connects the basement gallery with the street. A new opening over the central stair brings daylight and ventilation deep into the centre of the plan.
