Rebuilding works for a 1,800-student school from the 1920s incorporating an additional three-storey building
The building replaces the existing mobile classrooms and compromises varied teaching and activity areas including dining facilities, dance and performance studios and communal social areas.
The shape of the additional block, that follows a curved path on plan, takes into account the existing buildings on site and addresses the long-standing problems with traffic management, student movement between buildings, car parking and undefined play areas.
A central spine, permits simple navigation and provides defined links to the other school buildings and play areas. The glazed entrance foyer, located below an open study resource area and a cybercafe, provides access to the building.
On the main elevation, which is finished in white sto render, the special project rooms stick out of the facade as green cantilevered boxes. The rear facade is red brickwork with grey framed windows.
In the teaching block, mobile folding partition walls enable flexible classroom arrangements and permits future adaptability depending on the needs of the school. Natural ventilation is used throughout.
