Second home for a wind-surfing couple on the Chichester coast, featuring a cantilevered cedar-clad 'box' on first floor for open plan living
Located on Sandy Point in the south-eastern corner of Hayling Island in Hampshire, Pooley house sits on the shore and its eastern outlook optimizes views of Chichester harbour. It lies within a tidal flood plain and predicted one in a 100 year flood events meant that the ground floor had to be raised 1.1m above existing ground level.
As keen windsurfers the clients required a home that could be used for weekend breaks to indulge in their passion.
The basement provides storage for windsurf gear, while the acrylic rendered ground floor construction contains shower, bathrooms and bedrooms, with hard floors and robust simple finishes to withstand vigorous use.
Through adopting a steel frame construction at first floor the architects have allowed uninterrupted views, intended to pull in the harbour while simultaneously projecting the occupant out to the horizon.
The structure is clad in red cedar planks and cantilevers the open plan living space beyond the footprint of the ground floor. Through full height glass sliding doors a terrace provides an outdoor sun deck for entertaining.
