Facility for 160 staff and approximately 2,000 students for the University of Wales in Cardiff, Llandaff Campus

The building is located on a site to the rear of the campus and is surrounded by mature trees, with sports fields and the Llandaff cemetery adjacent. The site context is dominated by the nearby Llandaff Cathedral and views to its spire.

Accommodation is set either side of a full height atrium space which runs the length of the building. A three-storey wing houses the main entrance and administration area and the hospitality suite and has staff workspaces at upper floors.

On the opposite side of the atrium, a four storey wing houses the majority of the teaching spaces. A feature staircase rises in a continuous line from ground to third floor and bridges at each level connect the two sides of the building. At first and second floor levels, a 200-seat lecture theatre cantilevers over the main entrance below. This is positioned on the main axis of approach through the campus.

The massing of the building is expressed in the external materials. Staffordshire blue brickwork provides a robust and high quality facing to the ground floor of the three storey wing. Above this, the upper two floors are expressed as a two storey elongated ‘box’ clad in pre-oxidised copper fixed with variable spaced horizontal seams.
