Addition to a college of a library, A-Level centre and 60 classrooms grouped around a central courtyard
The buildings, which combine with the existing buildings to create a central campus courtyard, replace the library and 1950/60s teaching accommodation to provide 8961m2 of teaching space.
A series of teaching houses sit along the street frontage, the linear form building is broken down into five blocks. A block arranged around a three storey atrium, on a broader plan, completes the new build.
The construction utilizes a steel frame with exposed pre-cast concrete slabs, for high thermal mass, wrapped in a lightweight skin.
Concrete was removed from the demolition of the existing buildings, graded on site and re-used for the piling mat of the new construction.
Yellow brickwork is used as a common thread between the new and existing buildings. The first and second floors are white rendered and the use of timber is continued from other buildings on the campus.
