Contemporary conversion of an early 19th-century artillery tower into a three-bedroom family home

This scheduled ancient monument in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has been converted into a private residence with 360° views of the Suffolk coastal landscape.

The tower is virtually circular in plan and consists of 3.65m-thick vaulted masonry walls. The only entrance is by way of an exterior stair that penetrates the building at the first floor. The ground floor has no windows, and the three bedrooms are arranged radially around the central core.

The kitchen, dining and sitting areas on the second floor benefit from more natural light entering through the frameless glazing of the curved clerestory window. Steel struts behind the glass support the new prefabricated roof, which hovers above the old structure as a seemingly separate element.

The interior has retained the exposed brickwork finish and the reticent decor is sensitive to the existing materials.
