From the street the Columbia Road block is intended to be seen as a series of 'houses'
Jeremy Young Download Original
Hostel for homeless people together with one-person flats to rebuild independence and self-sufficiency
The building is four storeys high, constructed of a steel frame with concrete beam and block floors, buff facing brick and a composite steel roof. With stock brick, cedar cladding and powder-coated steel materials chosen for long life and hard wear.
Creating a sense of security was a high priority. Both the hostel and flats are entered via a gated, but transparent approach from the street, across a slatted hardwood ramp.
The hostel occupies most of the block, with four flats located above shop units. The remaining 21 flats are contained within a separate three-storey block. Intended to be seen as a series of 'houses', complete with front doors, but form part of a timber and glazed screen to the three staircase halls serving the flats.
