Building for Caterbury Christ Church University including an integrated library, learning resource centre and student support facilities, with conference and exhibition areas
The interactive hub of the University includes cafes, drop-in internet access, a range of student support services and co-located staff administrative areas.
The building comprises a four-storey rectilinear reinforced concrete structure on either side of a central glazed atrium. The dynamic character of the building has been expressed by the angular assortment of bridges and galleries that intersect the atrium of grand proportions, linking the building’s two wings of flexible floors.
The bridges that act as diagonal elements, carved out of the building, create internal voids and new oblique views from the site towards the city walls and the cathedral, making visual as well as symbolic connections to Canterbury.
Around 20 per cent of the energy consumed will be from renewable sources, primarily from ground-sourced heating and cooling systems.
