Gallery with private and public viewing spaces in a Haussmann-period building
Located near the Champs-Élysées in Paris, the American institution's latest edition is the fifth of seven Gagosian galleries designed by Caruso St John Architects.
The gallery features a public viewing space with private galleries above for collectors, with an aesthetic St John calls ‘understated luxury’. The public and private areas are linked by a curvilinear stair formed from a single piece of aluminium with oak treads.
The main gallery is located in the rear courtyard of a Haussmann-period building. The courtyard's glass covering was removed, allowing the ceiling of the gallery to be raised to 4.5m. This space is top-lit by a generous skylight and paved in reflective limestone.
The upper floors are laid with herringbone-patterned oak parquet and the gallery is fitted throughout with bespoke oak furnishings.
