Purpose-built medical teaching facility in Glasgow's historic centre

Located at the apex of a triangular site, the Woolfson Medical Building’s main entrance slips beneath a curved steel and glass double-skinned wall. Behind the glass, western red cedar blinds shade the internal space and provide a certain dynamism to the street façade.

A triple height triangular atrium forms the social core of the building, admitting light deep into the plan via a glass panel roof. This is supported on structural glass beams, spanning up to 15 metres, which cast dappled light across the white-rendered walls of the space.

Spilling into the atrium, a common room/café also opens to the north-west, onto a ‘hortus medicus’, a living catalogue of medicinal plants. The third side of the atrium is occupied by a cherry wood clad elliptical lecture theatre.
