Roof level extension to create additional space for a family on the top floor of a Victorian warehouse in Shoreditch
The existing flat roof was strengthened to accommodate the new structure and an opening formed for the new stair.
The extension accommodates a new sitting room, main bedroom and shower room, allowing the existing floor below to be reorganised to incorporate kids bedrooms, family bathroom, kitchen and family room. Further space was created at this level by relocating the flat entrance to the floor below allowing the top flight of the common access stair to become part of the flat.
The new extension is steel framed to minimise load. The frame extends around the roof terrace to create a sense of enclosure and link inside to outside. The new stair creates a sculptural focus for the lower floor as well as linking the two floors both visually and physically.
Finishes are kept simple, with white painted plaster and brickwork, hard wood flooring, timber decking and rough sawn timber external cladding. The roof is planted with sedum to minimise water run off, encourage biodiversity and enhance the unexpectedly verdant feel of the roof level garden.
