The Sale House in its context of clapboard cottages

Cubist style single-family house as addition to Morphosis' 2-4-6-8 House, close to Venice Beach, California
This single-family house on a quiet residential street in Venice, California replaces a previously existing bungalow that was destroyed by fire. The new house connects to the 2-4-6-8 House by Morphosis which was built on the site in 1978 as an annex to the former bungalow.
The living area is conceived as a baseboard to incorporate the garage, punctuated by the bedroom and courtyard volumes as serialized variations on the existing studio. The platonic geometry and primary colors articulated in the studio are further transformed and spatialized as internal rooms.
In contrast to Morphosis’ use of colour and relief, the house facade is monochromatic and flat: a sheer grey plane interrupted by glass sliders that frame the living room and open the interior to the garden and to the courtyard beyond.
Within the house, the themes of openness and neutrality are carried through the living areas with their white walls, polished concrete floors, and expansive glazing, but the ground-floor office, the master bedroom and the stairs that link them are brightly coloured.
