Barking Central consists of 246 apartments above a two-storey library
Jason Lowe (website) Download Original
The first stage in the masterplan for the town centre of London Borough, Barking, provides 246 flats in two parallel blocks
The scheme comprises four buildings arranged around a new public square, designed by muf Architects, each accommodating a significant quantity of housing.
The ground floors of the three smaller buildings are given over to commercial activities while the fourth would be constructed directly on top of the retained structure of the existing library. This building was assigned to a first phase of works, which commenced in 2003.
The eight-storey phase 1 building is on the western edge of the forecourt and incorporates a two-storey extension to the library. The elevations of the housing above have a staggered arrangement of windows and colourful balconies.
