Rejuvenating a hamstrung family home through remodelling and extending whilst reducing its overall energy consumption through passive design, ‘wrapping’ and highly insulated timber frame construction
Jo & Ian have lived in their home for 18 years – their lifestyle had changed, the house hadn’t, they didn’t want to move.
We spent time talking about how they wanted the house to work and how to future proof it for years to come. We hand-sketched lots of ideas, settling on extending both sides, creating a large family room full of light and life, a new entrance and a ground floor bedroom with en-suite for elderly relatives. The house connects with the garden as never before – the awkward geometry between house and garden being overcome.
Highly insulated timber frame construction protects the existing house. Rain water is harvested and solar water heating panels incorporated.
The extensions give stature and balance to the old house, being curved to reflect the prominent bays of the existing house. Deep cantilevered soffits offer protection and hide the roof leaving a clean perspective.
