The Mall Galleries are located within the Grade 1 former stable block of Carlton House Terrace in London, and our renovation of the East Gallery into a multi-purpose exhibition space will expand their range of activities.
The existing gallery that specialises in contemporary figurative art was designed as a windowless ‘box’, with full-height display walls and a suspended ceiling that substantially reduced the ceiling height and concealed original details.
Our initial exploratory work revealed the qualities of the hidden fabric; a galvanised profiled metal deck on large steel beams added in the 1970’s and original windows overlooking the Mall. The removal of the suspended ceiling and the introduction of daylight through the windows with new circular roof lights have transformed the gallery into a venue for larger and more varied exhibits. A new resin floor is a durable and flexible surface and a double layer blind system controls lighting levels internally.
