Mixed-use development that contains a martial arts dojo, alternative therapy business and two homes on a riverside plot within the Bath World Heritage site
Situated on a back street, and not visible from the main street, the cluster of three buildings replace a stone-breaker’s yard on the River Avon.
Along one side of a courtyard/ car park, the main structure contains seven treatment rooms and support offices for an alternative therapy business on the ground floor, with a martial arts dojo on the first floor.
The dojo cantilevers over a undevelopable sewer easement that runs through the middle of the site. Its roof has a cranked and skewed geometry to permit winter sun penetration to the neighbouring site, with rooflights to allow high levels of natural light while retaining privacy internally for martial arts activities.
The external appearance of the two houses, which sit on the riverside, matches that of the main building with timber batten-lined facades, on top of a stone base with zinc roofs. In both houses the living areas, with bay windows that overlook the Avon, are on the first floor with bedroom placed below.
