Recreational and professional swimming and diving facility with a main pool, separate diving pool, teaching pool and a rowing training tank
The complex provides for teaching, recreational swimming and diving for a large number of users, and also training facilities and full provision to Olympic standard for competitions
A large entrance foyer serves as the hub of all the circulation in the building. From here the public have direct access to the changing rooms and to the teaching pool. The main changing area is subdivided into three zones, one for the men, one for the women and and one which can be made available to either sex, by locking alternative doors.
The pools were excavated below original ground level into a subsoil of stiff boulder clay. Reinforced concrete columns support the access level structure of twin steel beams carrying precast concrete 'T' units which form the access level floor.
Originally built for the 1970 Commonwealth Games, this has been the main swimming pool in Edinburgh for the last 40 years. The pool was closed to the public in June 2009 to undergo a two year refurbishment program costing approximately £37 million.
